July 8, 2011

Fishing was the plan of the day.  We are all set with fishing licenses and John read all the rules IMG_7065and laws.  First we went out to scout out possible places to fish.  First we went by the bridge where a lot of people fish from.  While we were there a local got a fish on but lost it, then he got ANOTHER one and brought it in.  A great looking King Salmon.  We we are very enthused!  We went back to the apt and got all our gear and headed out.  We walked south of Thomas Basin and decided to go down a rock embankment to fish off the rocks where there were no other people.  Better odds, right?  No, we kept snagging on seaweed.  So we moved to a pier we checked out earlier.  That was a great spot but no bites.  We tried for about an hour there.  Fish were jumping all around today!  After trying there we headed to two separate places along the piers.  Of course the fish continued to jump and taunt us with their presence, by now I am getting discouraged.  We moved to a pier closer to the bridge and we could hear them saying they were biting on eggs so John went and got some eggs.  We continued to try in this same area on the pier but eventually moved on to the bridge where we saw one man catch his SECOND King SalmonIMG_7069 of the day.  He is a resident, as non-residents can only catch one per day.  He had two beautiful King Salmon for his day of work.  After trying there for another hour I got tired and headed back to the apt, just a short distance away, John followed about 15 minutes later.  I really wanted SALMON for dinner, but we had a really distasteful frozen pizza for dinner.  Don’t believe it when they say Digornio is just like take out, it isn’t!  I am childishly disappointed that we didn’t catch a fish!  I was convinced we would and now I seem to recall why I gave up fishing in the past.  I don’t really “like” fishing but just “catching” and we have nothing to show for hours of work.  Well, tomorrow is a new day.

Despite this minor disappointment, it was aIMG_7058 lovely day, no rain, five or more ships in port.  A Holland America ship departed around 2pm and a Celebrity ship was in its place just a few minutes later.  It is a busy, busy port for sure!

One further thought about fishing.  Despite washing my hands several times and doing the dishes in water so hot I could only put my hand in the water seconds at a time, I have the lingering odor of fish eggs on my hands…LOL
