July 9, 2011

Time for a little laundry and then off to try our luck fishing.  You know that old saying, “If I didn’t have bad luck I wouldn’t have any luck at IMG_7075all.”  LOL.  Anyway we had a nice time visiting with various people on the bridge.  This young man caught this beautiful King Salmon.  He was clearly very happy, a local, and I was happy for him.  He was nice and friendly and the crowd cheered after he spent a good deal of time wearing the fish down and bringing him in.  He even posed asking if anyone wanted a photo.  He had a crowd of about 20 people by the time he was done. The fish was 30-35 lbs and caught on a 15 lb test line.  Quite fun to watch.  Another man from the crowd who seemed to sort of know him but not really a buddy helped him gaff it when he got it in a little.  Even got his feet wet to do it so it was nice to see the companionship as some of the locals seem a bit uppity. The locals also seem to just slit the fish open, gut it and remove the gills right by the water. I would definitely need a table and they have severalIMG_7078 fish cleaning stations for public use.  That fellow who caught the two fish yesterday was not very friendly and when he came today he made a very cocky comment about “being good” and of course he would catch something.  I silently hoped he would get skunked today! We met a couple of men that I would say were ten years older than us.  They are headed to Prince of Wales Island for a week.  Some more of their friends are flying in today.  They have a two hour drive after they take the ferry.  They are renting and SUV here and a cabin there including a boat with all the fish finding perks.  One of them was from Florida and one was from San Diego.  We met some other couples from NY and they wanted recommendations on where to eat.  Since we have only eaten out once here, and it was good, but small portions, no special, and expensive we really couldn’t say.  Funny they were asking us like WE were locals!  Besides fishing, cooking, laundry, a movie, a Petra video, Rummikub, and a necessary trip to the market for bananas it has been another quiet day.  We are feeling so refreshed in the fresh air and cool weather. We are really glad we made this trip despite the disappointment in our fishing “luck” and lack of skill!  This evening we are going to just read and watch TV if something in on to watch.
